New Temporary Visa Option for Seasonal Workers Introduced by INZ

The New Zealand Government has introduced a temporary Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV) subcategory, designed to simplify the hiring process for employers needing seasonal workers during upcoming peak periods. This initiative aims to provide a more efficient pathway for employers while still ensuring necessary labour market testing.

Key Features of the SPWV Subcategory:

• Streamlined Process: Employers are required to advertise roles but are exempt from applying for a Job Check.
• Eligibility Criteria: The seasonal work must be weather-dependent, such as harvesting, ski instructing, or tree planting. The work must begin on or before 31 May 2025 and last no longer than 9 months. Roles in horticulture, viticulture, and fishing crew work covered by other visas are excluded.
• Application Deadline: Migrants or their advisers must submit applications by 31 March 2025.

Employer Requirements:

• Accreditation: Employers must hold employer accreditation.
• Wage Conditions: A minimum wage of $29.66 per hour for at least 30 hours per week is required.
• Advertising: Employers must advertise the role and provide evidence for the migrant's application.

This temporary measure is part of an ongoing review of the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme and will help inform potential longer-term visa options for seasonal work.
In addition, the Government has also announced changes to the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, including an increase in the RSE cap and initial improvements, effective from 2 September 2024. More information on these changes can be found on the INZ website.
