In response to New Zealand entering lockdown and changing alert levels, and the pressure on some of our essential services as a result, the Government has agreed to relax visa conditions to allow international students to help our healthcare sector.
This will ensure healthcare providers have sufficient workers every time an area of New Zealand is under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 or 4. This flexible visa condition applies while the area remains at Alert Level 3 or 4. After this point, the original visa conditions will apply. Because of the uncertainty around the Delta variant, these measures will be implemented until 31 December 2023. A student or interim visa holder (provided they held a student visa immediately prior to the interim visa) who wishes to undertake employment in a critical health worker role in an area under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 or 4 will have flexible visa conditions.
